Circle Tour of the Boundary Waters & Quetico

Circle Tour of the Boundary Waters & Quetico by Nancy McReady Ely, Minnesota

" Dave, Rich, Doug and I left Ely on Thursday morning and rode the lake trails and the Tomahawk Trail to the North Shore State Trail on to Grand Marais. The trails were in great condition. We stayed in Grand Marais at the Aspen Lodge Hotel, but I would suggest staying more up the Gunflint Trail to cut the next day of riding to Atikokan.

The trail from Gunflint Lake to Atikokan was freshly groomed. We gassed up at Kashabowie and continued on to Atikokan. Again the trail was in great condition.

Aurora Borealis
The Aurora Borealis, AKA 'Northern Lights' have been non-existent this year. According to Dirk Lummerzheim, a research professor who studies the aurora borealis for the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute, "we are at a solar minimum."

From Minnnesota to Alaska people are asking, "what happened to the aurora?"

North Shore Snowmobile Trail Report Feb 12, 2009

February 12th, 2009 " Departed downtown Grand Marais at day break, rode to Devil Track Lake. After the rain earlier this week trails close to Lake Superior lost the most snow, but are still very rideable. Trails up over the hill from Lake Superior are in very good condition and with the couple inches of fresh snow this morning, it was hard to tell there was a melt. Fresh snow falling today with 5-7 inches forecasted through Friday. Today we're riding about 100 miles to Gunflint Lake and back to Grand Marais. We'll publish our report ASAP so you can plan accordingly. In our opinion; the Upper North Shore snowmobile trails are fine and will be even better with the new snow. See Winter Weather Advisory " See trailhead option J for planning this route. Report by Chad Jones / Editor snowmobiletrails.com - Grand Marais, Minnesota. Send your report to us!
